Verso sells green hydrogen from France to a German steel giant

The Stahl-Holding-Saar Group (SHS Group) has signed a long-term contract with Verso Energy, which is planning a hydrogen plant in Oulu. The contract covers an annual supply of at least 6 000 tonnes of zero-emission hydrogen.

Verso Energy supplies the steel group with hydrogen certified as a renewable fuel of renewable origin (RFNBO). By using hydrogen and direct reduction technology in the electric arc furnaces at the Dillingen and Völklingen plants, the SHS Group can reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by up to 55% by the beginning of 2030.

Verso Energy produces hydrogen at the Carling Hydrogen Next Generation (CarlHYng) project in Carling, France. In the first phase, Verso Energy plans to build an electrolyzer with an investment of more than €100 million. The hydrogen produced from renewable electricity will be fed into the Moselle-Saar Hydrogen Conversion (mosaHYc) pipeline network, which will lead to the Dillingen steelworks.

The SHS Group laid a crucial foundation for the development of the regional hydrogen economy when it commissioned the mosaHYc pipeline network in April 2024, which is being built by the network operators Creos Deutschland Wasserstoff GmbH and NaTran Deutschland SA (formerly GRTgaz SA).
