Public consultation for pipeline between Haparanda and Örnsköldsvik
Nordion Energi invites stakeholders to participate in a public consultation for a hydrogen pipeline between Haparanda and Örnsköldsvik. Building new infrastructure is a long-term project, and consultations are being conducted at an early stage. The construction of the pipeline will take place gradually according to market demand.
The pipeline is part of Nordion Energi’s and Gasgrid Finland’s initiative Nordic Hydrogen Route, which, in addition to the current section, also includes a hydrogen infrastructure from Luleå to Kiruna, and from Haparanda to Vaasa. The project has been designated a Project of Common Interest (PCI) by the EU and has received SEK 330 million in funding from the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF Energy). In total, approximately 1,300 km of pipelines are planned. The infrastructure will be open to all producers and industries that require hydrogen.
– Hydrogen is a key component of Sweden’s future energy system. With the help of hydrogen infrastructure, production can take place in locations with favorable conditions, enabling efficient and secure supply of green hydrogen to existing and new Swedish industries. Hydrogen infrastructure complements the electricity grid, creating a more efficient and robust system, says Caroline Bertlin, CEO of Nordion Energi H2.
Consultations are conducted at an early stage of the project to identify a route for the pipeline that minimises impact on society and the environment. The consultation period runs from 3 November to 31 January. Feedback gathered during the consultation is essential for balancing various interests and planning infrastructure that takes surrounding communities and nature into account. Municipalities, authorities, businesses, property owners, residents, and other stakeholders are invited to participate. Information about the Nordic Hydrogen Route and the consultation is available on our website.
Nordion Energi aims to maintain close dialogue with those affected by the planned infrastructure. During the consultation, Nordion Energi will therefore host Open House meetings at 11 locations, where the public is welcome to ask questions, learn more, or share their views.
