Sweco plans Ren-Gas e-methane production plant in Tampere

Sweco is planning a Ren-Gas e-methane production plant to be built in the immediate vicinity of the Tarastenjärvi power plant, north-east of Tampere. The plant will produce e-methane, hydrogen and district heat from 2027 onwards.

The location allows for the supply of carbon dioxide from a nearby power plant of the energy company, as well as district heat integration for waste heat recovery. The plant has been granted a valid environmental permit and construction is scheduled for 2025-2027. When completed, the Tampere plant will produce renewable fuel for around 600 heavy-duty vehicles and a significant amount of renewable district heat for the people of Tampere.

"Ren-Gas' e-methane plant in Tampere will be a significant milestone in the implementation of green transition investments in Finland. Ren-Gas will build several e-methane plants in Finland over the coming years, so safety and modularity of the plant concept will be cornerstones of the design. We value Sweco's expertise in the hydrogen sector, as well as the company's extensive and competent resources to support the implementation of Ren-Gas' production portfolio," says Saara Kujala, CEO of Ren-Gas.

"We are excited to be involved in the design of a new type of production plant in Tampere that will use carbon capture and storage technologies. These will play an important role in reducing industrial emissions. It is great that our hydrogen expertise is trusted and that we are contributing to Ren-Gas' ambitious goal of building a production network," says Tuomas Salminen, Director of Sweco's Industry and Energy business.
