Read BotH₂nia's scenarios for the hydrogen economy development
BotH₂nia has published scenarios for the development of the hydrogen economy in the BotH₂nia Hydrogen Valley and throughout Finland. The scenarios include estimates of the pace of development of the hydrogen economy based on the most likely options at present. The scenarios also present the drivers on which the development of the hydrogen economy in Finland now depends.
The BotH₂nia Association, together with EnergySampo, implemented the hydrogen economy scenarios process during the spring and summer of 2025 by consulting its members in workshops and interviewing stakeholders about the planned investments in hydrogen value chains on the west coast of Finland. In addition to discussions with members and stakeholders, a seminar and panel discussion on the topic were held in August 2025 as part of the WasaFutureFestival.
The BotH₂nia Association's scenario work is a report that describes possible development paths for the hydrogen economy, the factors influencing them, and focuses in particular on identifying future customer needs for hydrogen.
The report is intended for everyone working with clean transition and hydrogen. It serves project developers, business planners, and technology experts in companies involved in hydrogen value chains. It also contains useful information for legislators, municipal decision-makers, and those working in administration, as well as for people working in various organisations, education, and communications.
The scenario report published by Fingrid and Gasgrid Finland in 2023 and Fingrid's 2025 electricity system vision have inspired the writing process of this report. These reports examine the potential of the hydrogen economy for Finland mainly from the perspective of hydrogen production. In this report, we want to highlight the demand for hydrogen and its potential, as these are prerequisites for investment decisions.
The report was written by Kaisa Penttilä, Visa Noronen, and Sari Kola.
