Nordic Ren-Gas utilises Keravan Energia's flue gases
Keravan Energia and Nordic Ren-Gas have signed agreements on using flue gases from Keravan Energia's biopower plant to recover carbon dioxide for the production of e-methane. The companies have also agreed on using waste heat in Keravan Energia's district heating network.
Keravan Energia and Nordic Ren-Gas have signed an agreement whereby the carbon dioxide contained in the flue gases of Keravan Energia's biopower plant will be used to produceSaara Kujala, CEO of Nordic Ren-Gas, and Jussi Lehto, CEO of Keravan Energia signed the agreements e-methane at a production plant designed by Ren-Gas. E-methane is a synthetic, renewable gas that can be used in land and sea transport to reduce emissions from the transport sector.
An agreement was also signed to use the waste heat from the production of e-methane as part of Keravan Energia's district heating production. This will support the development of clean heat production in the region. The waste heat generated in the process is renewable, non-combustible energy. The agreements were signed by Saara Kujala, CEO of Nordic Ren-Gas, and Jussi Lehto, CEO of Keravan Energia.
- We are very pleased that our cooperation with Nordic Ren-Gas has progressed and is getting even closer with these agreements. Our goal is to be carbon neutral by 2030, so it is important for us to be at the forefront of the energy industry's development. We see the Ren-Gas e-methane plant as bringing many new opportunities for us as a company and for Kerava as a region," says Jussi Lehto, CEO.
Long-term contracts will contribute to the realisation of the Kerava e-methane project. The renewable e-methane production plant planned by Ren-Gas will be built next to Keravan Energia's biopower plant. The location of the plant is ideal for its realisation, as the utilisation of the flue gas and the transfer of the waste heat generated in the process to the district heating network can be carried out right next to the plant. Construction of the plant is scheduled to start in 2026, with commercial commissioning in 2029.
- The Kerava project is an excellent example of sector integration, where different actors pool their resources for a more sustainable energy system. We are delighted to expand our operations in Kerava and bring a new investment to the region," says Saara Kujala, CEO of Nordic Ren-Gas.
The Ren-Gas plant runs on renewable electricity, ensuring a low-emission process from start to finish. The project will strengthen Keravan Energia's position as a pioneer in energy innovation.
- It is encouraging to see how the green transition will be translated into practical projects that combine the climate objectives of industry, energy production and transport," Kujala sums up.
