Nordic Ren-Gas develops one billion euro H2 investment in Pori
Nordic Ren-Gas develops a 300 MWH2 e-methane project in the Kirrinsanta industrial area in Pori, which is the largest single hydrogen investment in Finland. The collaboration with Pori Energia on carbon capture started in Aittaluoto in 2023, and the excellent infrastructure in the Kirrinsanta area enables competitive renewable e-methane production in Pori.
Ren-Gas has signed a reservation agreement for a site in the renewed Kirrinsanta industrial area with the City of Pori. Ren-Gas will start developing Finland’s largest hydrogen project in Kirrinsanta, where a 300 MW H2 e-methane production plant is planned. The total investment cost of the project is over one billion euros. The renewable e-methane will be used in heavy road transport and European maritime transport, significantly reducing emissions in these sectors.
Ren-Gas will immediately start the environmental impact assessment of the project. The hydrogen and e-methane production plant in Kirrinsanta will utilize biogenic carbon dioxide captured from the Aittaluoto power plant. The project development in Kirrinsanta supports the long-term collaboration between Ren-Gas and Pori Energia in the development of carbon capture and utilization. The carbon dioxide will be transported from Aittaluoto to Kirrinsanta by truck, where it will be processed into renewable fuel. Ren-Gas has strong experience in implementing multi-site projects from its previous projects.
The excellent infrastructure in the Kirrinsanta industrial area enables the development and implementation of a significant e-methane project. There is a strong and growing European demand for renewable e-fuels, which can be efficiently met in Pori by utilizing the existing infrastructure. Locally, the project has positive environmental and employment impacts. The process heat from the e-methane production plant in Kirrinsanta will be used to produce district heating for the Pori district heating network, enabling efficient emission reductions in the heating sector as well. The project is expected to create approximately 2,000 person-years of construction jobs and 50 permanent operational jobs in Pori.
“I am very pleased that we can develop such an important and concrete clean energy project in Kirrinsanta, Pori. It is great to continue close cooperation with Pori Energia also in this project, which will also ensure the efficient utilization of carbon dioxide captured in Aittaluoto,” said Ren-Gas Project Development Manager Sara Soini.
“Our carbon capture project in Aittaluoto is progressing well in cooperation with Ren-Gas, and the larger CO2 and district heating volumes of the Kirrinsanta e-methane plant make the overall project even more interesting for Pori Energia,” said Eero Niemitalo, Director of Energy Services at Pori Energia Oy.
Ren-Gas has been developing the carbon capture project in Aittaluoto in cooperation with Pori Energia since 2023. After signing the site reservation agreement, Ren-Gas will immediately start the environmental impact assessment for the Kirrinsanta project area. The commissioning of Finland’s largest e-methane project is currently planned for 2028.
