Luoto Energia and Gasgrid sign a MoU on gas supply

– The memorandum of understanding is a significant milestone for our Rauma project. A connection to Finland’s national gas transmission network would enable the supply of large quantities of renewable synthetic methane to industrial users across Finland and Europe, which would support Finland’s energy security, Europe’s broader energy independence and the goals of the green transition, says Erik Trast of Luoto Energia.

– Our collaboration with Luoto Energia sends a positive signal about the growing role of renewable gases in Finland’s future energy system. ‘Synthetic methane is a domestic and flexible energy carrier that can be stored, transported and utilised to strengthen security of supply, whilst reducing emissions from industrial processes,’ says Sara Kärki, Head of Hydrogen Development at Gasgrid Finland.

Demand-driven infrastructure development for renewable gases

Gasgrid has identified Satakunta as one of Finland’s most important regions for the development of infrastructure for renewable gases, including hydrogen-based fuels.

In recent years, Gasgrid has held numerous discussions with producers of renewable gases who would benefit from a flexible gas transmission infrastructure and access to wider gas markets. Gasgrid is currently investigating the possibility of extending the national methane transmission network to Western Finland as part of the long-term development of Finland’s gas infrastructure.

– Our aim is to strengthen the vitality of the gas market and maintain our customers’ ability to use gas competitively by developing the transmission infrastructure. Renewable gases, such as biogas, e-methane, green hydrogen and captured carbon dioxide, enable the transition to a carbon-neutral society,” says Janne Grönlund, Head of Gas Business at Gasgrid.
