Luke: recommendations for decision-makers to strengthen the acceptability of wind power

Wind power construction has increased rapidly, raising concerns both nationally and in local communities. A study by the Natural Resources Institute Finland examined wind power and land use changes from ecological, social, and economic perspectives. Researchers at Luke also made recommendations to decision-makers to ensure that the energy transition is implemented as sustainably as possible.

Luke: recommendations for decision-makers to strengthen the acceptability of wind power

The policy recommendation produced by Luke researchers in an international working group provides information and experiences on best practices related to wind power that promote a sustainable and socially acceptable transition to clean energy. The policy recommendation presents six ways for wind power planners and decision-makers to strengthen the acceptance of wind power:

1. Take into account the concerns of local communities about the impact of wind farms on people and address them openly, using scientific information.

2. Assess environmental impacts and apply a mitigation hierarchy to minimize the adverse effects of wind power on nature.

3. Highlight the market and non-market benefits and costs of wind power and incorporate them into the decision-making process.

4. Involve local communities in the planning process for wind power projects from the outset.

5. Ensure that all voices, including the silent majority and indigenous peoples, are given due consideration in decision-making.

6. Help local communities understand the broader benefits of wind power and the clean energy transition.
