Lack of regulations slowing down hydrogen investments in the north
Hydrogen is seen as essential to the success of carbon-free industry in northern Sweden. But the technology is new and the lack of regulations means that operators are reluctant to invest. This is the opinion of research and development engineer Johan Sandstedt.
Last week, 150 experts, investors and decision-makers from several countries have gathered at Luleå University of Technology to discuss the new technology at #BotH2niagoesLulea.
Hydrogen is identified as necessary for Hybrit, for example, but at present there are no hydrogen pipelines to meet the demands in northern Sweden and Finland.
Two years ago, the Swedish Energy Agency put a strategic plan on the table of the previous government - yet nothing has happened on the regulatory issue.
- This creates uncertainty among investors, but also among the authorities and actors who have to assess, approve and grant permits," says Johan Sandstedt, Research & Business Developer at SHDC - RISE Research Institutes of Sweden.
