Investment aid for renewable methane production in Kristinestad and carbon dioxide capture in Mustasaari
The Finnish Government has granted investment aid to Koppö Energia Oy for an investment in renewable methane production in Kristinestad and to Westenergy Oy for a carbon dioxide capture plant in Mustasaari.
Koppö Energia Oy will receive EUR 26 910 000 in investment aid for an investment in the production of renewable methane in Kristinestad. However, the aid would not exceed 30 % of the eligible costs of the project.
The novelty of the project is the refining of renewable hydrogen into renewable liquefied methane for transport purposes and the use of heat for electricity production. The decision was taken subject to approval by the European Commission. The plant would produce around 740 GWh of liquefied methane per year. The applicant estimates that the project would result in a reduction of CO2 emissions of about 160 000 tonnes per year.
Westenergy Oy's carbon dioxide capture and storage project in Mustasaari was granted investment aid of EUR 20 000 000, up to a maximum of 15 % of eligible costs. The project is linked to the above-mentioned Koppö Energia Oy project in that most of the carbon dioxide captured in Mustasaari would be transported to Kristinestad for use in the production of renewable transport fuel.
The planned carbon dioxide capture plant for the waste incineration plant would remove about 190 000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually from its flue gases. Most of the CO2 captured would be transported for use in the production of renewable transport fuel.
