Gasgrid’s market survey identified a potential of nearly 7 TWh of renewable methane
A nationwide market survey carried out by the gas transmission company Gasgrid identified a total annual production and consumption potential for renewable methane in Finland of nearly 7 terawatt-hours, which has not yet been connected to the gas transmission network. The responses particularly highlighted the production and consumption potential of the Satakunta region, which accounted for around 60 per cent of the total volume identified in the survey.
In spring 2026, Gasgrid carried out a nationwide market survey to gauge the interest of businesses and organisations in connecting to the methane network, as well as their views on the development of the existing network and the locations, timing and intended uses of any potential network extensions. The survey forms part of Gasgrid’s long-term development of the methane gas transmission network and the planning of potential regional network extensions.
A total of 24 responses to the survey were received between April and June 2026. Based on the responses, the new potential for methane production and consumption identified is approximately 6.9 terawatt-hours per year. Of this, approximately 1.4 terawatt-hours represents consumption potential and 5.5 terawatt-hours production potential, which corresponds to 40–50 per cent of Finland’s current gas consumption.
Satakunta’s share of the renewable methane production and consumption potential identified in the survey was just over 4 terawatt-hours per year.
–The results of the market survey confirm our view that there is significant interest in Finland in the production and use of renewable methane. Based on the survey, Satakunta in particular stands out as a clear hub where the production potential for synthetic and bio-based methane meets the identified industrial applications. These include, for example, the synthetic methane production plant projects planned for the region, says Janne Grönlund, Head of Gas Business at Gasgrid.
–Renewable methane enables a significant increase in domestic gas self-sufficiency and thus strengthens the vitality of the existing gas market. Renewable gases support the green transition.
The results will be utilised in the further planning of the gas network
The responses to the survey focused on projects at an early stage of development, but also included projects currently in the planning and production phases. The results reflect the current plans and potential reported by the operators and do not constitute binding investment decisions.
Gasgrid will utilise the survey results in planning gas transmission network routes and in further discussions.
–We will continue discussions with operators to confirm planned production and consumption volumes, project timetables and network connection requirements. For example, the memorandum of understanding signed with the operator planning an e-methane project in Rauma is the first concrete step towards promoting regional development,’ says Henriikka Pilpola, Development Manager at Gasgrid.
The market survey was carried out as part of a study by Gasgrid, the aim of which is to ensure that the gas transmission network will meet the future needs of Finnish industry, energy production and new gas-related business activities.
