Finnish Hydrogen Cluster published a roadmap for the hydrogen economy
The Finnish Hydrogen Cluster Roadmap provides guidelines and measures for making Finland the most competitive hydrogen economy in Europe by 2035.
Achieving this goal requires, above all, cooperation between hydrogen ecosystem operators and swift action. In addition, various measures must be launched simultaneously.
The measures presented in the hydrogen economy roadmap focus on, among other things, the creation of hydrogen markets, the availability of clean energy and biogenic carbon dioxide, financing, and safety.
A strong hydrogen economy is the cornerstone of Finland's sustainable growth and security of supply
The current government program aims for Finland to account for 10% of the EU's clean hydrogen production and use in 2030. At the same time, the world is in turmoil and there are forces at work that would like to return to the world of fossil fuels for economic and geopolitical reasons. It is important to remember that Finland has nothing to gain from the fossil fuel economy.
“The hydrogen economy offers a new basis for growth for our national economy. With the hydrogen economy, we can strengthen our energy and fuel self-sufficiency while reducing emissions. In this equation, it is important to adhere to climate targets and control measures at the EU level so that investing in clean technologies is profitable and the regulatory environment is predictable for our companies," says Minister of the Environment and Climate Sari Multala.
The production of hydrogen and refined products and the related value chains are critical from the perspective of security of supply, so that the needs of industry and the energy system can be met even in exceptional circumstances. Every ton of hydrogen and electric fuel produced in Finland reduces our dependence on imported energy. In addition, the hydrogen economy generates significant economic benefits and combats climate change.
"Finland has all the keys to success, but only if we understand how to work as a team in the same direction at the same time. We need parallel investments, legislation, research, infrastructure development, and increased energy self-sufficiency. This roadmap is our shared playbook, which will ensure that Finland is not left on the sidelines when the industrial map of Europe is redrawn," says Herkko Plit, Chairman of the Board of the Finnish Hydrogen Cluster.
Production of sustainable aviation fuel (eSAF) launches the market
Creating a market is one of the most important goals for the Finnish hydrogen economy over the next five years.
The first concrete step towards creating a market is the Lead Market Task Force for sustainable aviation fuel (eSAF). The task force's goal is for Finland to produce 60,000 tons of eSAF per year by 2030, which corresponds to about ten percent of the EU's total obligation. By 2035, the target will rise to 250,000 tons.
Creating a market for a strong hydrogen economy
In line with the hydrogen economy roadmap, the foundation for expertise and market creation will be laid in 2025–2030. In 2030, Finland will achieve the target set by the government and produce 10% of the EU's clean hydrogen. By 2035, the hydrogen economy will have created 100,000 new jobs in Finland and contributed over €30 billion to the national economy.
