EIT InnoEnergy plans clean energy plant in Kuopio

The City of Kuopio is reserving a 40-hectare planning area in the Sorsasalo industrial zone for EIT InnoEnergy, a European clean technology investor. The company is planning a clean energy plant in the area with a target commissioning date of 2030. The impact of the investment in Kuopio will be significant. When completed, the plant will employ 100 people directly and 200 indirectly. Through indirect jobs, during the construction of the plant and through the supply chains, the positive vitality effects will be widely felt throughout North Savo.

The planning reserve will enable, among other things, more detailed planning of the factory investment, the launch of the necessary permit processes and the establishment of cooperation between the industrial operators involved in the project.

Preliminary assessments indicate that the environmental impact of the plant will be limited. The production process will not generate significant emissions or side streams that would be harmful to the environment. The renewable fuels produced by the plant will replace petroleum-based products, thus helping transport and industry to reduce their emissions. A more detailed environmental impact assessment will be carried out in the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and environmental permit procedures required by legislation.

- Attracting green transition investment and creating more high value-added industry and jobs in Eastern Finland is of paramount importance. New green transition industries will reduce Finland's dependence on fossil fuels and also contribute to Kuopio's low-carbon targets," summarises Jukka Pitkänen, Director of the City of Kuopio's Economic Development Department.

EIT InnoEnergy, funded by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology, is one of Europe's leading investors in clean technology companies. One of its objectives is to launch large-scale industrial projects in the renewable energy sector in Europe. The organisation brings together the necessary experts, companies, investors and resources to make projects a reality. The aim is to contribute directly to the major challenges facing the energy sector: lowering energy prices, limiting greenhouse gas emissions, and increasing access and security. InnoEnergy is the initiator of three strategic European initiatives: the European Battery Alliance (EBA), the European Green Hydrogen Acceleration Center (EGHAC) and the European Solar Photovoltaic Industry Alliance (
