P2X Solutions procures synthetic methane production technology from the Finnish Q Power

Green hydrogen and P2X technology pioneer P2X Solutions has signed a supply contract for Finland’s first industrial-scale renewable synthetic methane production unit with the Finnish company Q Power. The contract covers the design, manufacture, and implementation of the unit for P2X Solutions’ hydrogen production plant in Harjavalta.

The methane production plant will be located in the Harjavalta Industrial Park, where P2X Solutions will also construct Finland’s first industrial-scale green hydrogen production plant. Part of the sustainably produced hydrogen is processed into synthetic methane in the commissioned methanation plant. The carbon dioxide required to produce methane will be captured from industrial processes.

The preparatory works on the P2X Solutions site in Harjavalta have already begun. Q Power will also start working on the plant this year. According to the schedule, the delivery and commissioning of the hydrogen and methanation plant will take place in 2024.

“Electrofuels, such as methane, methanol, and ammonia, are an important step on our way towards carbon neutrality goals in transport. E-fuels produced without emissions can be used in existing internal combustion engines and thus contain a huge emission reduction potential. We are proud of the cooperation with Q Power, another Finnish pioneer in green technology”, says Herkko Plit, CEO of P2X Solutions.

”Energy transition is inevitable – climate change is proceeding, and demands for energy self-sufficiency are increasing, so there is no time to waste. It is great to be able to implement an industrial-scale renewable synthetic methane production plant together with the forerunner P2X Solutions”, states Eero Paunonen, CEO of Q Power.

P2X Solutions made an investment decision for a 20 MW green hydrogen production plant in Harjavalta in early 2022 and continues to survey other potential plant locations. On August 19, 2022, the company announced the preliminary studies of a 30–50 MW green hydrogen and efuel production facility to be built in Joensuu with the energy group Savon Voima. The goal of P2X Solutions is to make 1,000 MW of electrolysis capacity in ten years.
